Covid Play 2021-22
During the light lockdown in November 2020 , 100 local people in Sidmouth took part in a “filmed on your camera” panto! I went out on the streets of Sidmouth asking people to pretend to be looking for Father Christmas, or pulling on a rope to get him out of a chimney where he had got stuck eating too many mince pies while I filmed them. Amazingly people said yes, and some filmed themselves looking and sent it in
Members of Sidmouth Mummers, Sidmouth Guiser Sisters, Sid Vale Storytellers and Sid Vale Community Productions all took the speaking parts and recorded themselves on their phones. My poor neighbours found themselves roped in as their roof was the designated roof where Father Christmas got stuck. Many of the local shops joined in by searching in their shops for Father Christmas , and Ebenezers Christmas Shop lent us Father Christmas’ sitting room so that Mother and Father Christmas could film their bits! Ashley Leeds even did us a cover song!
Most marvellous was the embodiment of Covid who threatened the health and safety of Sidmouth townspeople and most glorious was the Thursday morning i turned up to film the great battle with Covid in the market square only to find it full of delivery vans! But the people of Sidmouth were not put off by any of this and with gobsmacking gusto they took up sword, broomsticks and pitchforks and told Covid just what they thought of him! It was a joy to see Covid run away to the sea!
It is 40 mins long ( think how long it took me to edit it!) but I had to include all the clips! So join the over 1000 people who have watched it, and if you are local see if you can spot your friends and neighbours in the good fight against Covid. And keep fighting!
Saturday 31st July 4pm onwards
Sidmouth Giants, George and Sabra, will be about town, talking to visitors and posing for photographs
Sunday 1st August 12noon onwards
Sidmouth Mummers will be on tour around Sidmouth, starting outside The Anchor Inn at 12pm.
St George and The Covid, the play, will be performed for the first time at The Sidmouth Fringe Festival, Salcombe Regis.
St George and The Covid, the play, will be performed in it's traditional place, around the Market Square area in Sidmouth.
Wednesday 4th August 4pm onwards
Sidmouth Mummers perform at The Ham festival venue
St George and The Covid, the play, will be performed at The Ham festival venue.
All performed in 90 minutes with different shifts of actors coming to to perform and be filmed. See the results by going to the YouTube video below.
So it was the end of what would have been folk week 2020 and we weren't going to be sitting at home!!
